In therapy, I’ve observed that we often face significant challenges. These challenges stem from social pressures, stigmas, and socially constructed standards. Such influences can create considerable emotional distress. Even as adults, our minds assimilate these social standards. They tend to internalize them, giving them a privileged place within our cognitive and belief systems. This phenomenon can lead us to feel trapped or hooked by our thoughts.

Understanding Our Thoughts

To my clients in therapy, I often say: visualize the mind as a factory of thoughts that constantly produces ideas, or as a radio receiver that broadcasts music without interruption. While some of these thoughts can be useful—helping us plan or make decisions—others can be detrimental.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is one of my preferred therapeutic approaches. It provides us with tools to build a different relationship with our thoughts. ACT can help us unhook from our thoughts, preventing them from gaining excessive control over our behavior. As I frequently remind my clients, we should not allow our thoughts or emotions to control us like puppets.

The Power of Acceptance

Acceptance is a crucial part of ACT. It encourages us to acknowledge our thoughts and feelings without judgment. This practice allows us to observe our internal experiences rather than react to them. By accepting our thoughts and emotions without judgment, we can create space for change.

For example, exercising can feel tedious at times. Discouragement may arise as thoughts urging us to skip the workout and rest instead. However, we don’t have to wait for motivation to appear. Instead, we can choose to act first. If motivation comes afterward, that’s a bonus.

Committing to Action

Commitment is another essential aspect of ACT. It involves taking action aligned with our values (what matters to us), even when our thoughts and feelings suggest otherwise. This commitment to action helps us move forward in life, despite the obstacles we face.

When we commit to our values, we create a roadmap for our actions. This roadmap guides us through difficult times, reminding us of what truly matters. By focusing on our values, we can make decisions that lead to personal growth and fulfillment.

Building Resilience

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from challenges. It’s an essential skill that we can develop through ACT. By learning to unhook from our thoughts and commit to our values, we build resilience. This resilience allows us to face life’s challenges with confidence and strength.

In therapy, I advise my clients to recognize challenging thoughts and opt to behave in ways that reflect their values. Gradually, these minor acts of resilience can bring about substantial transformations in our lives.

The Journey of Self-Discovery

The path of self-discovery is crucial for mental health. Through ACT, we gain insights into ourselves and our values. This journey helps us identify what is genuinely important in our lives, encouraging us to uncover our true priorities. As a result, it leads to a more satisfying life, shaping our choices and decisions toward a more meaningful existence.

As we embark on this journey, it’s essential to be patient with ourselves. Self-discovery takes time, and it’s okay to take small steps. Each step we take brings us closer to understanding ourselves and our place in the world.

Seeking Support

Navigating life’s challenges can be overwhelming. It’s important to remember that we don’t have to do it alone. Seeking support from a therapist can be a valuable step in our journey. A therapist can provide guidance, tools, and a compassionate ear as we work through our challenges.

If you’re considering therapy, I encourage you to take that step. It can be a transformative experience, helping you navigate life’s ups and downs with greater ease.

In conclusion, we should not believe everything our mind tells us. Thoughts are just thoughts; they don’t define our future, and they don’t have to determine our actions. ACT can help us build a healthier relationship with our thoughts, leading to a more fulfilling life.
